This web page explains the individual characters that make up the AGI library name. It also lists the various types of libraries that are constructed by AGI.

Library Name Notation

The AGI library name is derived differently for rearrayed and non-rearrayed libraries.
Non rearrayed libraries are made up of 6 characters, with the first five characters being the first letter of genus, species, subspecies, cultivar and the library type. The sixth character (library prefix) increments from a to z for successive libraries.
If the library type belongs to group A in the table below, a new library prefix indicates that a different enzyme was used to produce the new library. On the other hand, if the library type belongs to group B, a new library prefix indicates that either the tissue type, development stage or the treatment values have changed for the new library.

The library name HVSMEa is derived as follows

Rearrayed library names are made up of 7 charatcers. Like the non-rearrayed ones, the first five letters still represent the genus, species, subspecies, cultivar and the library type. However the last two characters are for successive libraries. These two characters decrement from 'zz' to 'zy, zx, zw' and so on.
For e.g: The maize rearrayed library ZMMBBzz would be derived as follows:

Library Types
Different characters are used to represent each of the library types while deriving the library name. For e.g: If the library type is 'COSMID' it is denoted by the letter 'C'. The type 'COT' on the other hand is denoted by 'T' as the letter 'C' has already been assigned to the 'COSMID' library type. A complete list of the different library types and their respective notation characters are provided below.
Key for Library Type
GROUP A GROUP B

BAC = B
BAC-Rearrayed = B
COSMID = C
FOSMID = O

TAC = A
YAC = Y
PAC = Z
PLASMID = P
SHOTGUN = S

EST = E
EST-Rearrayed = E
SAGE = G
FULL_LENGTH_cDNA = F
Methylated = M
COT = T

Clone Name Notation
The AGI clone name is derived on the basis of the library name, plate number and the well address of the clone. For e.g: A clone belonging to plate 1 of the OSJNBa library with a well address of A11 will have the name :OSJNBa0001A11
